Each year, since the creation of this student organization in 1978, the Vietnamese Student Association at UC Berkeley has brought together many talented individuals to express this talent on and off stage through our Culture Show with singing, dancing, acting, and many other forms of art. Entirely student-run, it is not only an opportunity for performers to perform in front of thousands of audiences, but also an opportunity for many other Vietnamese students interested in theatrical production, in other words, the crew behind the stage production, to become involved firsthand. Our Culture Show aims to also bring attention to current issues in the Vietnamese community domestically and globally through the show’s story. This year, we are striving to continue this tradition of bringing together the Vietnamese community and allowing its participants to learn firsthand Vietnamese history and culture by putting on another Culture Show with our story of Stolen – Chuyện Hoa Sen Trắng (Story of a White Lotus). Centered around human trafficking, CalVSA’s Culture Show aims to bring the community’s attention to the horrors of Vietnamese women being forcibly taken from the safe contours of their home and into the world where innocence is stolen and slavery is introduced.

Posted in Events

The Vietnamese Student Association at the University of California, Berkeley strives to reflect the diverse, vibrant, and dynamic Vietnamese population on campus. Cal VSA’s annual Culture Show is one such way through which this goal is achieved. Since the establishment of Cal VSA in 1978, the annual VSA Culture Show has brought together students to produce a theatrical production of music, art, dance, drama and prose. The annual VSA Culture Show is best known for this integration of creative disciplines.

Ultimately, the show provides a unique performance space for creative expression by Vietnamese Americans and those interested in Vietnamese culture on the Berkeley campus. However, Culture Show is more than just one final night of performance. It is a process through which new friendships are built and Vietnamese culture is explored and learned. It is an unforgettable experience for its participants through the long practices, late nights, tireless devotion to the show, and most importantly, priceless bonding with one another.

Family, friends and community leaders from all backgrounds are welcomed and encouraged to partake in this experience. For some, it may bring back memories of their childhood; for others, it may give a different perspective on a new culture. Cal VSA invites anybody and everybody to join us in this yearly celebration of the unique Vietnamese spirit, history, and culture.
